Growing Info: Propagating and Caring for Desert-Hardy Fig Trees at Red Rock Orchard

At Red Rock Orchard in St. George, Utah, we propagate our fig trees from cuttings of proven, desert-tested stock to ensure strong roots, adaptability to alkaline soils, and reliable performance in arid Southwest conditions. Figs are one of the easiest fruit trees to propagate, with experienced growers often achieving 70–90%+ success rates when following best practices for sanitation, moisture, heat, and humidity.

Below are step-by-step guides tailored for home orchardists. We’ll add videos of our process soon. Always start with healthy, disease-free material from productive trees.

Tools & Materials Needed

  • Healthy fig cuttings (pencil-thick, from last season’s growth)
  • Sharp, sanitized pruning shears
  • Well-draining soil mix (e.g., ProMix HP, Sunshine #4, or your preferred airy blend with perlite)
  • 4x9 tree pots (tall for root development)
  • Parafilm (or grafting tape) / paraffin wax for sealing
  • Rooting hormone (e.g., #2 or gel like Clonex)
  • Mild soap water and 1:10 hydrogen peroxide solution for cleaning
  • Paper towels or clean cloth
  • Water for initial soil mix
  • Heating mat with thermostat (ideal)
  • Clear plastic bags or produce bags + rubber bands (for humidity)
  • Plant labels, scale (optional for weight-based watering), grow lights

How to Start Fig Cuttings (80%+ Success Rate)

Figs root readily from dormant hardwood cuttings taken in late fall to early spring. Focus on consistent warmth (bottom heat ~75–78°F), even moisture without sogginess, and humidity to prevent desiccation.

  1. Select & Prepare Cuttings: Choose 6–12 inch cuttings with 3–4 nodes (thicker-than-pencil wood preferred). Cut just below a node at the bottom (45° angle) and flat or angled at the top.
  2. Clean & Sanitize: Gently wash with mild soap water and a soft brush. Rinse thoroughly. Soak in 1:10 peroxide-water for 5 minutes. Air dry completely on paper towels.
  3. Seal the Top: Wrap the upper 1–2 nodes (exposed portion) with Parafilm or dip in melted paraffin wax. This retains moisture without needing frequent watering.
  4. Prep the Base: Lightly scrape the bark near the bottom node to expose cambium (light green layer). Dip in rooting hormone and tap off excess.
  5. Pot Up: Fill 4x9 pots with pre-moistened soil (roughly 5:1 soil-to-water ratio by volume—aim for moist but not wet). Make a hole in the center. Insert cutting so 1–2 nodes are above soil; tamp gently. Do not bury Parafilm.
  6. Humidity & Heat Setup (key for minimal watering): Place the potted cutting inside a clear plastic bag (or cover the pot/soil surface) and seal loosely at the top or around the pot base. This creates a mini greenhouse, trapping humidity so you can leave it on heat with little to no watering for 4–6 weeks. Place on a heating mat set to 75–78°F at the pot bottom (use a thermometer). Keep in a dark or low-light warm spot initially (e.g., 65–72°F ambient).
  7. Initial Care: Bottom-water as needed by monitoring weight (e.g., add back lost grams) or adding ~½ inch water in a tray. Avoid overwatering to prevent rot. After 1 week of green growth introduce indirect light or grow lights. Do not put in direct sun until after 4-5 leaves are large (hand size).....slowly introduce to direct sun light. 1 hour each day for a couple days then a couple hours for more days. Etc...

Roots typically form in 6–12 weeks. Success improves with room temp at 78 degrees or bottom heat and stable humidity.

How to Up-Pot Rooted Cuttings

Once roots are established (visible at drainage holes or gentle tug resistance) and the cutting has 3+ leaves about the size of your hand:

  • Move to a larger pot (we prefer 5 gal) with an in-organic, well-draining mix.
  • Handle the root ball gently to minimize shock.
  • Water thoroughly after transplanting and place in bright, indirect light.
  • Keep soil moist but not soggy for the first few weeks. Gradually acclimate to full sun.

Up-pot to a 15 gallon or plant in the ground when the tree is lager than a couple feed tall with multiple large leaves.

How to Plant in the Ground

Plant in spring after last frost, once the young tree is well-rooted and 2–3+ feet tall for best survival.

  • Choose a sunny, protected spot with well-drained soil. Amend with compost if needed.
  • Dig a hole slightly larger than the root ball. Plant at the same depth.
  • Water deeply to settle soil, then mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
  • Provide wind protection and consistent moisture the first season. Pits or large containers can restrict roots for smaller mature trees if desired.

How to Fertilize Fig Trees

Figs are vigorous but young plants are sensitive.

  • Wait 4–6 weeks after rooting or transplanting before fertilizing (leaves will be yellowish if they need to be fertilized).
  • Start with half-strength balanced fertilizer (e.g., 4-1-2 which is the best usable ratio for plants) or organic options when new growth appears. Fertilizing every two weeks.
  • For established trees: Apply in spring and early summer. Avoid high-nitrogen late in the season.
  • Monitor for deficiencies; figs appreciate calcium, magnesium, and micronutrients in alkaline soils. If leaves yellow when mature, add Iron to fertilizing regement.

Additional Tips for Desert Growers: Ensure excellent drainage to combat alkaline conditions. Consistent irrigation (drip preferred) prevents stress. Protect young trees from extreme heat/wind initially. Prune lightly for shape.
